How to Make A St. Patrick’s Day Wreath & Other Dollar Store Decorations

I love decorating my home for the different holidays and seasons throughout the year! Β Growing up, my mom ALWAYS put out seasonal and holiday decorations and I loved it! I looked forward to seeing the decorations every year. I started decorating my apartment and now my home for the different holidays and seasons. Now that I have kids, I am even more excited to decorate our home. However, there are criteria for these decorations:

Inexpensive & Budget-Friendly: We are living on one income at the moment so every penny counts.

Easy & Simple: I am limited on time with a 3 year old, 1 year old and house to keep clean. The time I do have is valuable so I don’t want to spend HOURS upon HOURS making a holiday decoration.

With that in mind, the purpose of this post is to show you how to decorate your home for St. Patrick’s Day using items found at the Dollar Store.

Before I get into this post,Β  make sure you check out my St. Patrick’s Day Activity Book. It’s a 9-page booklet filled with detailed step-by-step instructions for making 8 St. Patrick’s Day decorations with your kids.Β  Each activity is easy to make, requires minimal supplies and promotes bonding with your child(ren).Β  Click on the image below to grab your activity book and start creating and building lasting memories with your child(ren) today!

How to Make A St. Patrick’s Day Wreath

St Pats Wreath Materials

First, you need to gather your materials. I was browsing the Dollar Store and came across this wire wreath frame. I had no idea this was something I could find at the Dollar Store! For the wreath body, I am using St. Patrick’s Day scarves. I chose to use 8 scarves: one for each section of the wire frame plus two more to fill in and make the wreath look fuller. As an adornment for the wreath, I picked out a “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” headband. The green ribbon is for hanging the wreath up. All these materials cost a total of $10! Can you believe it? A St. Patrick’s Day Wreath for $10 is definitely inexpensive and budget-friendly. Now that you have your materials, let’s start making your wreath!

Steps for St Pats Wreath

  1. Β Take a scarf. Fold this scarf in half two times.
  2. Β Lay the scarf under the wire frame with the frame laying face down. Make sure the open scarf end is towards the middle of the wreath.
  3. Β Weave the open scarf end through the wire frame as shown in the picture.
  4. Β Flip the wire frame over and separate the two scarf sections (closed=left and open=right) as shown in the picture.
  5. Β Place your hand inside the middleΒ scarf section.
  6. Β Bring the closed scarf section (left side) through the middle scarf section.
  7. Β Separate the open scarf section (right side) into two pieces. Pull one piece through the section you just pulled through.
  8. Β Tie the two pieces together to hold the scarf in place.
  9. Β Tuck the tied piece inside and pull the scarf so it covers the knot.
  10. Repeat Steps 1-9 with all 8 of the scarves, placing one scarf in each section of the wire frame and the other two scarves where there appear to be gaps. Use the other two scarves to cover any of the wire frame that is exposed. You want to hide this!

Adorning Your St. Patrick’s Day Wreath

Decide where you want the top of your wreath to be and push the scarves aside so some of the wire frame is exposed. Then, use scissors to remove the plastic piece from the “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” headband. Now you just have a St. Patrick’s Day hat πŸ™‚ After that, flip the wreath and the hat over. Β Use the two long pieces of fabric to tie the hat to the wire frame. Then, use two safety pins to attach the each end to the back of the hat. This keeps the hat upright. You could also use hot glue to attach the ends, but I preferred the safety pins. The hat is two layers so be careful to only put the safety pins through the back layer so you don’t see them in the front. Your wreath is now ready to be displayed! You can choose to hang your wreath from the wire frame or from a piece of green ribbon tied to the frame.

A Thrifty Table Centerpiece

My dining room table always looks empty without a centerpiece. So I enjoy creating one out of things I already have in my house or items I find at the Dollar Store. This centerpiece was put together with items from the Dollar Store. For this St. Patrick’s Day table centerpiece, I used wine glasses turned upside down as candle holders and filled the base of the wine glass candle holders with tissue paper. I cut each sheet of tissue paper in half and used one half sheet of dark green and one half sheet of light green in each glass. The gold coins and shamrocks take this centerpiece from special to extra special!

Another favorite spot to decorate in my house is the fireplace mantle. Using decorative glass jars, colorful pieces of glass and candles, I was able to put together an eye-catching display. Guess what?? Β All of these items were found at the Dollar Store. The shamrocks were something I already owned. They were purchased at a store called Christmas Tree Shops and I don’t remember them being pricey (maybe $2 or $3 at most).

St Pats Fireplace Mantle Decoration

This is how I used items found at the Dollar Store to decorate my home for St. Patrick’s Day. I hope I have inspired you to decorate your house for the holiday/season. Check out the items below for even more inexpensive and simple ways to add the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day to your home!

Simple St. Patrick’s Day Decor for Your Home

You can hang this simple St. Patrick’s Day shamrock garland to your fireplace mantle, across the top of the wall in your living room, or across a window in your home. The pops of green from the shamrocks add the spirit of this March holiday to your home. The natural burlap material is durable and fade resistant so you can use this to decorate your home for St. Patrick’s day for many years to come.

Pillows are another way to easily decorate for each season/holiday. All you have to do is throw them on the couch and enjoy! These pillows are warm and inviting. Each one subtly adds a touch of St. Patrick’s Day to your living space. Not only are these pillows fade resistant, they are machine washable. This is a bonus if you are a mom of young children!

Window clings are a hit in our house. Both my son and daughter love seeing them on the windows or patio door. These window clings are reusable and blend well with the other St. Patrick’s Day decor described in this post. They are a simple and inexpensive way to add a touch of the holiday to your home.
