Cozy Home Decorating Ideas for Fall
Warm Up Your Home with the Colors of Autumn
Fall is officially in the air and I couldn’t be more excited. I love everything about the season of fall: the sights, the sounds and the smells! My husband and I got married in the fall because I love the colors so much. Fall is also home to my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. Who can resist the juicy turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, warm dinner rolls, crunchy green beans, sweet cranberry sauce and flavorful stuffing? Just thinking about it as I type this is making me hungry for a Thanksgiving meal, but I have a few months before that! Anyway, back to the purpose of this post….decorating your home for fall. I look forward to decorating my house for all the seasons. While it may take me a full day to finish decorating my house each season, I enjoy sitting back and looking at the decorations for several weeks.
I usually decorate for fall during the month of September. September is back to school season and fall begins during this month. Β Last year, I decided to put up my fall decorations over Labor Day Weekend. Β My main reason for doing this was because I was 9 months pregnant with my daughter and I wanted to make sure the house was decorated before she made her arrival. This year I also put up my fall decorations over Labor Day Weekend, but the reason was different. This year, my husband was home all weekend and did not have to coach swim practice or attend any swim meets. Therefore, he was available to help me decorate and keep our daughter entertained while I decorated. Decorating the house is much more difficult with a mobile 10 1/2 month old!
Foyer Shelf Fall Decorations
When you walk into our front door, this is the shelf you see. The top of the shelf has a scarecrow sitting among leaf garland. The tall glass vase is filled with a fall vase filler. There is a display of scarecrow figurines that I found on clearance at the end of the season one year when I was shopping at the outlets. I usually purchase any home items for a specific season at the end of the season because they cost much less. The basket on the bottom right shelf is filled with a pumpkin, gourd and corn mix. I absolutely love these mixes for the different seasons because they can be placed in baskets, vases, or scattered on a table. They are an inexpensive way to add a seasonal touch to your home! The items can also be added to a fall sensory basket for your baby or toddler. While I don’t usually put out specific Halloween decorations, I did add our Nightmare Before Christmas Jack and Sally mugs and the bucket we will be filling with candy for Trick-or-Treaters. My husband loves The Nightmare Before Christmas and we make it a point to watch it around Halloween every year.
A Fall Spread in the Dining Room
Our dining room is to your right when you walk through our front door. We don’t eat in here very often, but I love adding a seasonal table cloth, placemats and centerpiece. All of these items take your dining room table, in my opinion, from ordinary to extraordinary. I know that you can spend a lot of money on fancy table centerpieces, but mine is very inexpensive! In fact, it is constructed with wine glasses from the dollar store! I use these glasses for each season and just change what is on top of them and inside of them. Here is how I used them to decorate for St. Patrick’s Day. Once again, I used leaf garland to show “falling leaves” on the table. I placed a mini pumpkin from the mix I described above inside of each wine glass. I used these glass Pyrex custard dishes (I had them in my kitchen already) and filled each one with fall glass gems and an orange tealight candle. This harvest mix of glass gems is a perfect addition to your fall decorations. I can’t wait to share a Thanksgiving meal with my family around this fall table.
Adding Fall Touches to the Eat-In Kitchen
We eat all of our meals at this glass table, which extends off our kitchen. I switched out the placemats for our fall ones. These are the same ones I use on the dining room table. Kohl’s is my go to store for home decorating items like placemats, table cloths, table runners, candle holders and even seasonal picture frames. You can’t beat the sales, coupons and Kohl’s Cash! As I mentioned earlier, I absolutely love the smells of fall. These smells include pumpkin, cinnamon and spices, and apples. So I pull out my fall candle scents and it makes me so happy to light them π I chose a pumpkin scent for the kitchen table and an apple scent that sits on the kitchen stove. The Macintosh Apple candle is currently lit as I write this post and my house smells so good! Yankee Candles last so long too! One advantage to being at home during the day is enjoying my candle scents.
Decorating Our Living Room for Fall
We are lucky enough to have a gas fireplace in our living room. The mantle, along with the dining room table, is another “must decorate area” of our home. This is the focal point in our living room and it can be seen from our garage entrance and the kitchen. Once again, I draped leaf garland across the mantle. I used several sections of garland to give the mantle a fuller look. Initially when I am working on putting the garland on the mantle, I become easily frustrated because I want it to look perfect. I try not to mess with it too much, twisting the leaves here and there. I keep telling myself, the leaves are not perfect in nature! Seeing the mantle all decorated warms my heart and brings a smile to my face. It is by far my favorite decorated space in our home!
This shelf is next to our fireplace and the first thing you see when you walk down our stairs. We purchased it last year when we were updating our living room and I love it. It adds display space for our favorite photos and does not require a lot of space in our already small living room. As I mentioned before, I love shopping for seasonal decorations at Kohl’s! They always have the greatest selection of seasonal picture frames and other seasonal home decorations. I absolutely love these picture frames. Pumpkins are a go-to fall decoration for me (I love eating anything made with pumpkin too!) so these frames were right up my alley. The “Welcome To Our Pumpkin Patch” is just the right size for this shelf and gives us a way to display multiple photos. I like to print our favorite photos from things we did in the fall. The top shelf shows one of my favorite photos from our engagement photo shoot in October 2013, our wedding photo album (We got married in the fall….November 30, 2013) and a glass pumpkin from our trip to the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, NY where I ran the Wineglass Marathon. I smile every time I look at this shelf!
Our Upstairs Fall Display
When you walk up our stairs, we have a small landing that overlooks our foyer. We put a writing table there so for a place to display more of our favorite photos π There are more wedding photos displayed here and a favorite photo from our honeymoon in Disney World. The pumpkin tablecloth brings fall colors to this area of our home. I found this cute ceramic pumpkin water pitcher at Walmart and had to buy it and use it as a vase for my fall silk flower display! TheseΒ wire pumpkin candle holders finish off the display. Another spot of my home that makes me smile every time I see it, which is quite often!
Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn!

Thank you! It is one of my favorite ways to add fall touches to my home! I’ve been using the same strands of leaf garland for at least 5 years now so I can vouch for how long it lasts!
